Success for JR Levins’ Client as Newcastle United Ends Controversial Ban Early
19/11/2025
JR Levins is pleased to announce a successful outcome for our client, Linzi Smith, after Newcastle United agreed to end its ban on her attending matches one year early. The club’s decision brings a high-profile belief discrimination case to a close.

Linzi Smith, a lifelong Newcastle United supporter and gender-critical campaigner, was banned from attending matches after the club received complaints from activists about comments she made on X (formerly Twitter). At the club’s request, the Premier League examined her social media presence to confirm her identity. You can read more about Linzi’s case, including our letter of claim and other key documents, on her crowdfunding page.
Following the investigation, Newcastle United issued a three-year ban preventing Linzi from attending Newcastle games. She was also reported to the police, an action that resulted in no charges and ultimately an apology from Northumbria Police for their handling of the matter.
With legal representation from JR Levins and the support of counsel Anya Palmer and Beth Grossman, Ms Smith brought proceedings in the County Court alleging that the club’s actions amounted to unlawful discrimination because of her protected gender critical beliefs. The case also highlighted wider concerns about freedom of expression, the treatment of online speech, and the safeguarding of legally protected philosophical beliefs – issues of increasing importance for campaigners, employees, and service users across the UK.
A positive settlement
We are pleased to confirm that Newcastle United have agreed to settle the claim and bring Linzi’s ban to an end one year ahead of schedule. This settlement allows her to resume attending matches and marks an important recognition of the rights of individuals who hold gender-critical beliefs.
Importantly, not all of the funds raised by Ms Smith’s supporters were required for the litigation. She has generously chosen to donate the surplus to another significant gender critical discrimination case involving our client Andreas Muller.
Upholding free speech and the manifestation of protected beliefs
This case adds to a growing body of work by JR Levins in defending clients who face adverse treatment because of their legally protected beliefs. As public debate around sex and gender continues to intensify, individuals on all sides of the discussion must be treated fairly, impartially and within the boundaries of the law.
For supporters, employees, campaigners and members of the public who find themselves targeted because their views are considered controversial, the law provides important safeguards. Even profound disagreements do not justify discriminatory treatment.
