Can I Get Legal Aid for Child Arrangements? (FREE LEGAL ADVICE for families)

14/09/2026

Legal aid can help pay for legal advice and representation. Don’t always assume you won’t qualify, a solicitor can check for you.

What if there has been domestic abuse?

You may qualify if:

  • you or your child have experienced domestic abuse
  • you have accepted evidence
  • you cannot afford legal costs
  • your case meets the legal aid rules

Domestic abuse can include threats, controlling behaviour, emotional abuse and financial control, it does not have to involve physical violence.

Evidence may come from the police, a court, social services, a doctor or a support service. You can still contact a solicitor before you have collected everything.

What if social services are involved?

You should normally receive free legal advice if you have received a Letter Before Proceedings. If care proceedings begin, parents and people with parental responsibility will usually qualify for legal aid. Take any letters or court papers to a family law solicitor as soon as possible.
