What can I expect to happen if I am charged?

If a JR Levins client is under investigation by the police, then our round the clock police station advice service means that they will be represented free of charge during police interview. We then monitor and advise on the progress of the case if the investigation continues. Our police station advisors are hugely experienced, and they understand the concerns of clients whilst ensuring they protect their rights as suspects and keep them informed about them.

If a suspect is charged with a sexual offence, then they will appear in court. In the magistrates’ court they will be represented by a lawyer with decades of experience in such cases. If the case moves to the crown court, their case will be prepared by a lawyer with vast experience in sexual cases, and advocacy in the crown court will be provided by a carefully selected crown court advocate with the skills to provide the best possible representation.

Am I less likely to be convicted if I spend a lot on legal representation?

We know how frightening it can be to face a sexual allegation. It can be tempting to think that the more money is spent on a case the more likely a suspect is to secure a desired outcome. We don’t believe that that is how it should be. We offer fair and transparent pricing, at the same time as an excellent service.

Can I access Legal Aid?

If a client is eligible, and they wish us to apply for public funding (legal aid) then we will do that. If public funding is granted, then a defendant’s case will cost them nothing or be subject to a contribution. Either way, their case will be handled by a team of experienced senior staff and lawyers. The service is subject to peer review by The Legal Aid Agency and must be provided subject to rigorous performance standards fixed by them.

You can read the Government’s Legal Aid information here.

Private funding - What if I’m not eligible for Legal Aid?

If a defendant is not eligible for legal aid or wishes to opt out of the legal aid framework, we will arrange and agree private funding. We do not see this as an opportunity to exploit the fears of a frightened client. We will discuss the terms of our relationship, so that it works for the client and for us. We will only agree these terms if the client and we are satisfied that we can work to the highest possible standards.
